Blizzard has officially announced Diablo V, and this time the story begins after the worst possible outcome. Instead of entering Sanctuary to stop Diablo from winning, players will arrive in a world where the Lord of Terror has already succeeded and the heroes have been defeated.
The game was revealed during BlizzCon 2026, with Blizzard confirming a planned Spring 2029 release. It is still several years away, but the studio has already made it clear that Diablo V will take the franchise in a darker direction than previous entries.

Sanctuary has fallen, safe places are disappearing, and the familiar idea of heroes arriving just in time to save the world is gone. Blizzard says the central question of Diablo V is what players are willing to become when the world has already been lost.
That premise could significantly change the tone of the game. Previous Diablo titles usually placed players in the middle of an approaching catastrophe, but Diablo V starts after the catastrophe has already happened, creating a world where survival may matter just as much as defeating demons.
Blizzard has not revealed every detail yet, but the company has started discussing the game’s world, class design, and overall creative direction. The studio appears to be treating Diablo V as the beginning of a new era rather than simply another expansion of the ideas introduced in Diablo IV.
The announcement also comes as the Diablo franchise celebrates its 30th anniversary. Blizzard says more than 130 million players have entered Sanctuary across the series, and the company is expanding the franchise beyond games with a new animated Diablo series currently being developed with Netflix.
Diablo IV is not disappearing immediately either. Blizzard still has new seasonal content planned, while the Amazon class is scheduled to join Diablo IV in 2027. That gives the current game several more years of support before Diablo V eventually arrives.

Many major details remain unknown. Blizzard has not confirmed the final platform list, pricing, monetization model, or how closely Diablo V will follow Diablo IV’s live-service structure. With a Spring 2029 target, there is also plenty of time for the project to evolve before release.
Still, the basic idea behind Diablo V already makes it stand out. Diablo has won, Sanctuary has fallen, and players are entering a world that has already lost its heroes.
For a series built around repeatedly pushing back the forces of Hell, starting the next chapter with complete defeat may be one of the most interesting changes Blizzard has made to Diablo in year
